Surprising fire impacts to ecosystems closely studied

Studies suggest fire can increase species richness of plants meaning there is more variety of plants found in areas with naturally occurring fires. Wildfire specialist, Max Moritz, of UC Santa Barbara's Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, is studying this effect over time. Moritz is researching "If fire regularly consumes some of the base of an ecosystem's food chain, how does that ripple up to affect the biodiversity at higher levels?".
