Who We Are

Gregory J. Watkins-Colwell

Gregory J. Watkins-Colwell

Greg is a zoologist and was primarily trained in ecology, systematics and biogeography.  He received a B. A. in Zoology from Ohio Wesleyan University and his M.S. in Biology from Ohio University and is now the Senior Collection Manager of Herpetology and Ichthyology at Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.  Most of his career has involved the use of museum collections to help understand Earth’s biodiversity. He has participated in field work throughout the United States, Latin America, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. His research interests often involve micro-endemism and understanding population-level diversity within broadly-ranging species which can reveal that some populations are under greater threat than others, or that some evolutionary lineages are more unique than expected.  Data such as these are often useful when forming conservation priorities.
